History of the Alma Mater

Delfino Calvo

History of the Derry Area High Alma Mater

Recording of the Alma Mater

Closely bound to thee...

The voice of Derry Area High and an inspiration to many, Mr. Delfino Calvo composed a musical piece that helped to cement the tie between New Alexandria, Derry Boro, and Derry Township. This talented and well-respected educator, born in Corteranzo, Italy, and raised in the small town of Indiana, is eternally connected with the glorious name of our school.

Even from a humble beginning, hard work can enable one to live in fame. Mr. Calvo's experience as a coal miner and member of the U.S. Army Air Force Band during WWII, preceded his academic life. His studies at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and Duquesne University became the basis of his teaching.

As a musician, Mr. Calvo played the tenor saxophone and clarinet. He taught instrumental music and led the marching band during his career from 1948-1986. During the 1950's, he submitted to the school board a draft of our current Alma Mater, which was accepted by the Derry Area Joint School System.

The Alma Mater will always be heard at football games, as we stand closely bound, and respectful of our learning institution and community. The past decades have seen many joys and tears at Derry, and yet we are comforted that we will continue to have no fears for another half-century. One man's simple yet contagious and beautiful melody, has echoed through the hall of Derry Area High, and will endure for another 50 years and beyond.
